The San Damiano Crucifix is a large Romanesque rood crucifix, painted on wood, currently located in the Basilica of Saint Clare in Assisi, Italy. It is believed to have been painted by an anonymous 12th-century artist from the Benedictine order. The crucifix is notable for its lifelike depiction of Jesus Christ and its influence on Saint Francis of Assisi. The San Damiano Crucifix measures approximately 3 meters (10 feet) tall and 2 meters (6 feet) wide. It depicts Jesus Christ with his arms outstretched and wearing a crown of thorns. His eyes are closed as if he has just died, while his body appears to be slightly slumped forward in deathly exhaustion. The painting also includes Mary and John standing at either side of the cross, along with several angels hovering above them in mourning. In 1205, Saint Francis was praying before this crucifix when he heard a voice telling him to "rebuild my church". This experience inspired him to devote himself to God's service and led him to found the Franciscan Order which would become one of the most influential religious orders in history. Today, replicas of this crucifix can be found all over the world as it serves as an important symbol for many Christians who seek inspiration from St Francis' example or simply wish to remember his legacy through prayerful contemplation before this iconic image.
